Gooey caramel and chocolate chip bars made with German chocolate cake mix and pecans. A semi-homemade shortcut dessert that bakes in under 30 minutes.

German chocolate cake mix gets blended with melted margarine, evaporated milk, and chopped pecans to form a rich, cookie-like dough. Half goes into the pan and bakes briefly, then gets layered with chocolate chips and a river of melted caramel.
Flattened bits of the remaining dough go on top, and back into the oven it goes until everything melds into a sticky, layered bar that earns its name.
Kitchen Tips
- Melt the caramels in a double boiler for even heat. Microwaving works too, but stir every 30 seconds to prevent scorching.
- Let the bars cool completely before cutting. Warm caramel will stretch and pull instead of slicing cleanly.
- These freeze well. Wrap individual bars in parchment, seal in a bag, and pull them out whenever the craving hits.

Grease and flour 13×9 inch pan.
Preheat oven to 350℉ (180℃).
Blend cake mix, margarine, ⅓ cup evaporated milk, and pecans, just until moistened.
Press ½ the dough into the bottom of the pan.

Sprinkle chocolate chips over top of baked cake mix.

Take small pieces of the remaining dough and pat then flat between your hands.
Lay these flat pieces over caramel layer.
Caramel will not be completely covered.
Bake 15 to 18 minutes. Cool and cut.
