10 minNo milk, no yogurt, no ice cream, and yet this tropical shake blends up thick and creamy thanks to a ripe banana doing all the work. Mixed with pineapple juice and orange juice, then blitzed with ice, it tastes like a Caribbean beach vacation in a glass.
The banana is what gives this shake its body. When blended, it creates a smooth, velvety base that tricks your mouth into thinking there’s dairy involved. Use a really ripe banana with brown spots for the most natural sweetness and the creamiest texture. An underripe banana will leave the shake chalky.
A tablespoon of grenadine syrup is optional but worth adding. It turns the whole drink a beautiful pink and adds a pomegranate sweetness that plays well with the tropical fruit. Find it in the soft drink mixer aisle at any grocery store.
This is a great option for kids (or adults) who are lactose intolerant and miss creamy blended drinks.
Kitchen Tips
- Freeze the banana ahead of time for a thicker, slushier shake without extra ice diluting the flavor
- Blend the fruit and juice first for 30 seconds, then add ice and blend again. This two-step method gets the smoothest result
- Use fresh-squeezed orange juice if you have it. The flavor is noticeably brighter than from concentrate
- Drink immediately. The ice melts and thins it out within minutes
Variations
- Add a handful of frozen mango chunks for an even more tropical flavor
- Blend in a tablespoon of coconut cream for a piña colada-style shake
- Swap grenadine for a splash of passion fruit juice for a tangier, less sweet version

“This delicious drink is great for kids who are lactose intolerant because it tastes very creamy but does not contain milk.
Although optional, grenadine syrup (available in the soft drink section of supermarkets) turns the shake a wonderful pink.
Peel banana and break into pieces.
Place in blender or food processor.
Pour in pineapple juice, orange juice and grenadine syrup (if using), blend until smooth, about 30 seconds.
Add ice cubes; blend for 1 minutes or until creamy and frothy.
