| 1 | pound | ground beef | |
| 1/2 | cup | onion | chopped |
| 1/2 | cup | cabbage | chopped |
| 1 | cup | rice | raw |
| 15 | ounces | tomato sauce | |
| 6 | ounces | tomato paste | |
| 2 | cups | water | |
| 1 1/2 | teaspoons | salt | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | thyme | |
| 1 | each | bay leaf | |
| 2 | tablespoons | brown sugar | |
| 1/4 | cup | sweet and sour sauce |
Brown ground beef in electric skillet.
Stir to break up.
Add onion, green pepper, cabbage and rice.
Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste or puree, water and seasonings.
Heat to boiling.
Reduce heat.
Cover and simmer for 25 minutes until rice is tender, stirring occasionally and adding more water if necessary.
Note*
For Sweet and Sour Casserole: add brown sugar and vinegar with other ingredients.

After being a little homesick and missing some good homecooking, I researched the Internet and found this recipe for one of my favorite Vietnamese comfort foods. This recipe tastes just like what Mom use to make, and my Western husband loves us. We've had it twice in the last month.
