Hearty broccoli ham hot dish layered with rice, homemade white sauce, and buttered breadcrumbs. A Midwestern casserole classic that uses up leftover ham.

Layers of cooked rice and broccoli get blanketed in a from-scratch white sauce loaded with cubed ham, then crowned with buttered breadcrumbs and a shower of cheddar.
It bakes up bubbly and golden, filling the whole kitchen with that unmistakable smell of comfort food doing its thing.
This is the kind of recipe that turns leftover holiday ham into something everybody asks for seconds of.
Kitchen Tips
- Make the white sauce from scratch. It sounds fussy, but it’s just butter, flour, and milk stirred together until thick
- Use fresh breadcrumbs tossed in melted butter for a crunchier topping than store-bought
- Let it rest 5 minutes after baking so everything sets up and slices cleanly
Ingredients
Directions
Cook broccoli according to package directions.
Drain.
Spoon rice into a 13×9 inch baking pan.
Place broccoli over rice.
Melt butter in a large skillet.
Sprinkle 2 tablespoon of melted butter over the bread crumbs and set aside.
In remaining butter, sauté onion unitl soft.
Add flour, salt and pepper, stirring constantly until bubbly.
Stir in milk and continue cooking until sauce thickens and bubbles.
Cook and stir for one minute.
Add ham and heat through.
Pour over rice and broccoli.
Sprinkle the crumbs over all.
Bake at 350℉ (180℃) F for 30 minutes or unitl heated through. Sprinkle with cheese.
Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
