Sometimes the best side dishes are the ones that stay out of the way and let a few quality ingredients do the talking.

Fresh broccoli gets a quick steam, then a fast toss in butter and lime juice before being showered with toasted pine nuts.

The lime adds a bright, citrusy zing that wakes up the broccoli, while the pine nuts bring a rich, buttery crunch.

Twenty minutes, four ingredients, and you’ve got a side that elevates any plate it sits next to.

Kitchen Tips

  • Steam the broccoli for just 2 minutes. You want crisp-tender, not soft. It gets another 3 minutes in the skillet after that.
  • Toast the pine nuts in a dry skillet over medium-low heat, shaking often. They go from golden to burnt in a blink, so watch them closely.
  • Fresh lime juice is non-negotiable here. Bottled lime juice has a flat, metallic taste that won’t give you that same bright pop.
  • Toss the pine nuts in at the very end so they stay crunchy.
