10 minThis is the after-school snack that every kid figures out on their own sooner or later. A slice of white bread, a smear of ketchup, a slice of American cheese, sliced hot dog rounds, and a pinch of oregano. Into the toaster oven until the cheese melts and the edges of the bread get crispy. Done.
Is it pizza? Not really. Is it good when you’re 10 years old and hungry? Absolutely. The ketchup stands in for tomato sauce, the American cheese melts into a gooey blanket faster than mozzarella, and the hot dog coins crisp up around the edges just enough to be satisfying.
The oregano is doing more work than you’d expect. That single pinch is what tricks your brain into thinking “pizza” instead of “open-faced hot dog sandwich." It’s a tiny detail that makes a real difference.
Kitchen Tips
- Use the toaster oven, not the microwave. The microwave makes the bread soggy and the cheese rubbery. The toaster oven toasts the bread and melts the cheese properly.
- Slice the hot dog thin. Those ⅛ to ¼ inch coins cook through faster and get slightly crispy edges in the toaster oven. Thick slices stay cold in the center.
- Watch it closely. This goes from done to burnt fast in a toaster oven. Two to three minutes is usually enough.
Variations
- Upgrade the cheese: Swap American for shredded mozzarella for a stretchier, more pizza-like melt.
- Veggie version: Skip the hot dog and add sliced mushrooms and diced bell pepper for a slightly more grown-up take.
