1 minThe Black Russian is a two-ingredient cocktail that’s been holding its own since the late 1940s. Vodka and coffee brandy over ice. No shaker, no garnish, no fuss.
The ratio is what matters: 1.5 ounces of vodka to ¾ ounce of coffee brandy gives you a drink that’s spirit-forward with a sweet, roasted coffee backbone. The coffee brandy (Kahlua is the most common choice) brings enough sweetness that no simple syrup or sugar is needed.
Pour both ingredients directly over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass. Give it one gentle stir to combine and let the ice do its work. The slow dilution as the ice melts opens up the coffee flavor over the course of the drink.
Chef Tips
- Use quality vodka. With only two ingredients, there’s nowhere to hide a cheap spirit.
- Large ice cubes melt slower and dilute the drink less. A single large cube is ideal if you have a mold.
- Chill the glass in the freezer for 10 minutes beforehand for a colder, more polished drink.
Variations
- White Russian: Float an ounce of heavy cream on top for the creamy, Lebowski-approved version.
- Dirty Black Russian: Add a splash of cola for a longer, more casual drink.
