15 minThese little bites pack a surprising punch for something so simple to throw together.
Toasted bread rounds get spread with a warm mixture of melted butter, chopped ham, and cheddar cheese, then topped with a sweet dab of mango chutney and a sprinkle of Parmesan before a quick trip under the broiler.
The chutney is the secret weapon here. Its fruity sweetness plays against the salty ham and sharp cheese in a way that keeps people reaching for just one more.
A dusting of paprika on top adds color and a whisper of warmth.
Fifteen minutes from start to finish, and they disappear even faster.
Chef Tips
- Cut your bread rounds with a small glass for clean, uniform circles. Two rounds per slice of standard bread.
- Freeze homemade French bread before slicing if you want thinner, sturdier crouton bases. The frozen loaf cuts cleanly without crushing.
- Don’t overload the chutney. A small dab is all you need. Too much and it overwhelms the cheese and ham. You want a hint of sweetness, not a flood.
Ingredients
Directions
Make toasted bread croutons: Using a small glass, cut 2-inch rounds out of slices of bread (you’ll get about two per slice).
Lightly toast both sides of bread.
Heat butter, ham and cheese together.
Spread on toasted bread croutons. Top with a dab of mango chutney and grated Parmesan cheese.
Brown slightly under broiler.
Sprinkle with a little paprika and serve hot.
Note: If you make your own French bread, make a loaf smaller in diameter.
Freeze, then slice frozen to crouton thickness or thinner.
Makes for better base.
