55 minThese ain’t your grandma’s baked beans out of a can. Well, they start that way, but by the time you’re done with them, they’re something else entirely.
A pound of ground chuck gets browned and crumbled, then sautéed with diced green and red bell peppers and a heap of onions until everything is soft and fragrant.
Freshly ground allspice, cloves, and peppercorns bring a warm, aromatic backbone you won’t find in any store-bought seasoning, and a half cup of brown sugar with hickory BBQ sauce creates that sticky, sweet-smoky glaze that keeps you going back for just one more spoonful.
Thirty minutes in the oven and these beans are ready to steal the show at any cookout or potluck.
Pro Tips
- Grind the whole spices fresh right before using. Pre-ground versions lose their punch fast and can’t match the depth of flavor.
- Drain the beans well in a colander. Excess liquid will make the final dish soupy instead of thick and scoopable.
- Use hickory-flavored BBQ sauce specifically. It pairs best with the warm spice blend and brown sugar.
- These reheat like a champ and taste even better the next day once all those flavors have had time to get acquainted.
