Babe's Apple Cake
Submitted by Beth48
Babe’s Apple Cake is a rustic, wholesome treat made with whole wheat flour, wheat germ, diced apples, walnuts, and warm cinnamon-nutmeg spice. Dense, moist, and barely sweet enough to call dessert.

1 hrsSome apple cakes try too hard. This one doesn’t need to.
Babe’s Apple Cake loads four cups of diced apples into a batter built on whole wheat flour and toasted wheat germ, giving it a hearty, nutty depth you won’t find in a boxed mix.
Crunchy walnuts, warm cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg round out the flavor, while brown sugar and vanilla keep everything grounded and fragrant.
It bakes up dense and moist, the kind of cake that’s just as good with morning coffee as it is after dinner with a dusting of powdered sugar.
Kitchen Tips
- Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith. They hold their shape during baking and cut through the sweetness.
- Don’t overmix the batter once the flour goes in. A few lumps are fine and keep the cake tender.
- Let it cool completely in the pan before slicing. It firms up as it rests and slices much cleaner.
- A light dusting of confectioner’s sugar on top is all the decoration this cake needs.
