Avocado and banana mash is one of the simplest, most nutritious first baby foods you can make. Two ingredients, a fork, and 30 seconds. The combination works because both fruits are naturally creamy when ripe, both are easy to digest, and both have that subtly sweet flavor that babies tend to accept readily.

Use fruit that’s almost too ripe to eat plain. Brown-spotted bananas and avocados that yield easily under thumb pressure mash to the smoothest texture and have the highest natural sugars. Underripe bananas leave gummy strings; underripe avocados taste grassy and have the wrong consistency.

The combination is genuinely well-balanced for babies. Avocado provides healthy monounsaturated fats critical for brain development, and banana adds potassium, vitamin B6, and gentle natural sweetness that may help with the avocado’s slightly grassy edge.

Mash to a consistency that matches your baby’s stage. Smooth puree for first foods (around 6 months), slightly chunky for older babies practicing chewing.

Kitchen Tips

  • Make only what you’ll use immediately. Both fruits oxidize within 30 to 60 minutes and turn brown and bitter, even with refrigeration.
  • A small splash of breast milk or formula thins the puree to a more drinkable consistency for very young eaters.
  • Squeeze a few drops of fresh lemon juice onto the mash if you need to hold it for a short while. The acid slows browning and is safe for babies over 6 months.
  • Mash directly in the serving bowl to minimize cleanup and keep the food at room temp (most babies prefer it).
  • Always check with a pediatrician before introducing new foods, particularly for babies under 6 months or with allergies.

Variations

  • Mash in 2 tablespoons cooked, mashed sweet potato for added vitamin A and fiber.
  • Add a few mashed berries (blueberries or raspberries) for color and antioxidants once your baby is at the appropriate age.
  • Stir in a tablespoon of plain whole-milk yogurt for added protein and probiotics for older babies.

Directions

What can I say except mush together with a fork. Most babies adore this combination, but avocados are high in unsaturated fat, so go easy on this dish.
