45 minThis breakfast cake masquerades as virtuous with its bran and applesauce, but it tastes like a treat.
Cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg create warm spice notes while raisins add chewy sweetness.
The applesauce keeps it incredibly moist for days without feeling heavy.
Kitchen Tips
- Grease only the bottom of the pan so the cake can climb the sides as it rises
- Use wheat bran or oat bran depending on what you have on hand
- Don’t overbake; a few moist crumbs on the toothpick are fine
- Serve warm with butter or cream cheese for an extra-special breakfast
Ingredients
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350℉ (180℃).
Grease the bottom only of a 9 inch baking pan.
In a large saucepan, heat the margarine and applesauce together over medium heat until the margarine is just melted, then remove from heat.
Add the remaining ingredients, stir quickly to moisten, then pour the batter into the baking pan.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
