30 minThese tender scones pack more nutrition than typical versions thanks to wheat germ, but you’d never know from the taste.
Chopped fresh apples and honey sweeten the dough naturally, while cinnamon and nutmeg add cozy warmth.
A quick knead and gentle pat into a circle, then you’re slicing wedges and baking until golden.
The cinnamon-sugar topping creates a slightly crispy exterior that contrasts beautifully with the soft, apple-studded interior.
Kitchen Tips
- Don’t overmix: Stir just until moistened for tender scones; overworking makes them tough
- Cold butter is key: Cut in cold butter until pea-sized for flaky layers
- Gentle kneading: Five to six light kneads develop just enough structure without toughness
- Pat, don’t roll: Hands create the right thickness better than a rolling pin for rustic scones
Variations
- Add a handful of raisins or dried cranberries to the dough for chewy sweetness
- Swap apples for pears when in season for milder fruit flavor
- Drizzle with honey glaze after cooling for extra sweetness
Ingredients
Directions
In a large bowl, combine flour, wheat germ, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and nutmeg.
Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Combine the apple, milk and honey; add to dry ingredients just until moistened.
Turn onto a floured surfac, knead gently 5 to 6 times.
Gently patt dough into a 9-in. circle, ½ in. thick. Combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over dough.
Cut into eight wedges and place on a greased baking sheet.
Bake at 400℉ (200℃) for 15 to 18 minutes.
