Don’t be fooled by the name, these aren’t chocolate brownies. They’re dense, moist apple bars with a brownie-like crumb from all that oil and the long baking time. Three cups of chopped apples disappear into the batter, making every bite fruity and tender.

The recipe specifically says not to use an electric mixer. Hand mixing keeps the texture chewy instead of cakey.

Bake them low and slow for 50-60 minutes until they’re set all the way through. They keep for weeks in an airtight container.

Baking Tips

  • Mix ingredients by hand in the order listed for best texture
