| 1 | cup | bread crumbs | dry, unseasoned |
| 1/4 | cup | sugar | white |
| 1/3 | cup | butter | melted |
| 5 | cups | apples | (5-6 medium sized apples), peeled, sliced |
| 1/2 | cup | brown sugar | |
| 1 | teaspoon | cinnamon | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | nutmeg | |
| 1 | each | lemon zest | and juice |
| 1/2 | cup | walnuts | chopped |
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Lightly butter a 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
Combine the bread crumbs with the white sugar and butter.
Pat half of the mixture in the bottom of the baking dish.
Combine the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice and zest, and walnuts.
Spread over the crumbs.
Top with the remaining crumbs.
Cover and bake for 40 minutes. Then remove the cover, increase the heat to 400F, and continue to bake for 10 more minutes.
Serve warm with cream, whipped cream, or ice cream.

I have made this bread so many times that I have lost count. It is great with a spagetti dinner. You can also make the dough and shape into rolls which were a big hit when I made them for a ladies' salad lunch.
