Walmart announces plans to bring more local produce to your plate

As part of its goal to be more environmentally responsible, Walmart Stores Inc is focusing on making more fresh produce from local farmers available on its shelves and using sustainable ingredients in its Great Value Brand products.

Reuters reports that by the end of 2015, Walmart plans to sell twice as much local produce in its U.S. stores. This fresh produce will come from both small and large farms, giving support all areas of local agriculture.

This is all part of a greater plan to implement changes in the U.S. and emerging markets that will have a positive impact on the environment.

Local produce is higher in nutrition, because it does not have to travel as far to get to your plate. Using local produce also helps the environment because fuels do not have to be expended to transport it to the store. Plus it supports your local economy.

How can you add more local produce into your favorite recipes?

Try to think seasonally. Fruits and vegetables have the most nutrition are the freshest with the most flavor and are the least expensive when they are in season.

Be adventurous! If the only produce available is something you have not eaten before, go online and find a delicious recipe.

Be flexible about storage. If you want to preserve the nutrition of your local produce at its peak, think about freezing it to use in your favorite recipes throughout the year.
